Did you know....North Main Park's ties to North Greenville Rotary?North Main Park, right across from Stone Academy and right behind the Bobby Pearse Community Center was started by North Greenville Rotary Club's donation of the playground equipment. It's a great park in the North Main area that offers baseball / softball facilities, basketball courts, picnic areas, and a playground. Folks can also reserve the Bobby Pearse Community Center for events like birthday parties.
My P.E.T.S. Experience by President-elect Shanda JeffriesEver seen the movie “Jerry Maguire?” Most folks know that famous line - “you had me at hello” but there is another line in that movie that has always kind of stuck with me. It’s the day where Jerry breaks up with his fiancé, loses his best client and is down to one that may or may not even get to keep his current contract. He shows up drunk at his new employee’s house to vent and commiserate. He is sitting on her couch, just having realized the full scope of everything going on his life at the moment, and has just given her a hugely uninspiring speech about the future of the company that he has been forced into starting. There is a brief moment of quiet, and she turns to him and says “The truth? I care about the job, of course. But mostly, I just want to be inspired.”
“BUT MOSTLY, I JUST WANT TO BE INSPIRED.” Those words hold true for so many of us as we go about our daily lives, taking care of all the have to’s and should get done’s. When I attended President-Elect Training in Greensboro, NC (also known as PETS), I went into it ready to learn about all the things I needed to do, and expecting to leave with a list of things to get done that felt like it was 5,000 miles long dragging behind me. I left with a new degree of humility because of the torch that my peers in my own club have entrusted to me to keep aflame, a burning desire to be a catalyst for change, a motivation to share my personal and sometimes emotional commitment to Rotary, and a decision in my heart that this will be the year I finally get to do what I set out to do years before I had ever heard of Rotary (more about that later). In short, I was and am inspired. Part of the reason for the strong inspiration that struck me is the knowledge I gained at PETS. I learned about Rotary Foundation - how it works, how things are funded, and the causes around the world that have been addressed because of it. I learned about the founders of Rotary, and how it came to be that one little club of 4 people ended up becoming this global organization of do-gooders that endures over a century later. I learned about the difference everyday people just like myself are making in the lives of others – Rotary-sponsored youth exchange students who one day start programs to put shoes on orphaned children in third world countries, women who honor their own heritage and gender by finding a way to place preventive care hospital equipment in European villages, people who travel the world to dig ditches and build water towers, folks just like me who are guided through military checkpoints and are even held at gunpoint just to deliver polio vaccine to a little boy whose sister is forever paralyzed by that disease. I learned all about the methods and organization that makes it possible for every single one of us to be a difference maker, and I learned that Rotary makes it possible. I AM INSPIRED. My all-time favorite quote is from a philosopher named William James. He wrote a letter to Helen Keller in 1908, in which he told her, “Act as if what you do makes a difference. It does.” This quote rings true in every situation, if you ask me. We all want to make a difference. We all take different actions on a daily basis. And we all have an effect on someone else every time we make a choice. We simply don’t always know who we are affecting or how. What I learned at PETS is HOW Rotary makes a difference, and for whom. What I have yet to learn is where that knowledge is going to direct my journey as a Rotarian. PETS has given me the confidence to proceed fearlessly on my journey despite the fact that I don’t know where it will end.
